When I saw the theme for this week’s Gallery, I immediately remembered that song “You are my sunshine”.
When I had my first baby boy, he loved his playnest. There was a bright sunshine thing that played that song every time he touched it. There were other mobile toys attached to the play nest but that was always his favourite.
Of course he and my other children are my sunshine. I am lucky to have them and they brighten every day, even the ones when I am blue.
Did you know that 1 in 4 women lose their children during pregnancy and birth?
I am trying to help Tommy’s raise awareness of the support they offer women as they strive for happier endings for more mums.
What has that got to do with sunshine?
Well, one that I would like to see every woman that has love to offer to a child have a safe pregnancy and birth so that they can have the “sunshine” joys of being a mum.
Secondly, that the sunshine vitamin D is essential for a good pregnancy. Vitamin D protects your baby from the bone disease rickets. It’s found naturally in some foods such as eggs and oily fish, and is sometimes added to breakfast cereals and margarine. The main source of vitamin D is produced in our skin after being in the sun (not sunbathing!) – just 15 minutes in the sun, two or three times a week will be enough. If you have dark skin, or always cover your skin, or if it’s winter, you will be more likely to need a vitamin D supplement. Current recommendations are for all pregnant women to have a 10 micrograms (10mcg) supplement of vitamin D each day. Ask your midwife or GP for more information
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away
